SPAN hosts lecture by Father Roy Bourgeois

September 14, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) at the University of West Georgia will host human rights activist Father Roy Bourgeois at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 3, in the lower level of Z-6.

Bourgeois recently won the 2005 Aachen Peace Prize for his non-violent protests against the training of Latin American soldiers at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning. He founded the School of the Americas Watch in 1990 and has been critical of the military training and U.S. foreign policy in Latin America for decades.

The Aachen Peace Prize, founded in 1988, is an internationally-funded award to honor men, women and organizations who have made a contribution to world peace through non-violent means.

SPAN is a national campus organization that promotes peace and social justice and is sponsored by Dr. Patricia Campbell, associate professor of political science. SPAN meetings are held 8 p.m. on Mondays in the University Community Center (UCC).
