Hands on Carroll County

September 10, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia and residents of Carrollton and Carroll County are joining together for the first annual Hands on Carroll County Sept 30 - Oct. 1. The event is part of the Hands on Georgia statewide event that supports volunteer service projects in local communities.

From landscaping a schoolyard to building a nature trail, volunteers from UWG, Carrollton and Carroll County will don gloves and boots and work on more than a dozen beautification projects throughout Carroll County.

UWG faculty are recruiting student and faculty volunteers for four service projects in Carrollton and Carroll County. New landscaping at Mt. Zion High School, work on the Central High School gymnasium and a nature trail in Mt. Zion are scheduled Friday, Sept. 30. A clean up of the Little Tallapoosa River is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 1.

“This is a great opportunity for the University of West Georgia students and faculty to get together with the community,” said James Hembree, superintendent of grounds at UWG. “A lot of these projects just need the tools and the labor to get them finished.”

Other community projects that need volunteers include the Villa Rica Prospector’s Courtyard, Roopville and Bowdon parks maintenance and a foster parent project.

Donations of planting materials, tools and food for lunches are still being accepted by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Environmental Projects Committee and Keep Carroll Beautiful. Both groups have partnered with UWG, the Community Foundation of West Georgia, Carroll County Master Gardeners, and Carroll Tomorrow. For people who are unable to work outside, other volunteer opportunities are available.

Saturday, Oct. 1, Tallapoosa River volunteers should meet at the Public Safety building parking lot on West Georgia Drive at 9 a.m. Volunteers need to wear sturdy shoes or boots and gloves. For more information email chollaba@westga.edu.

Friday, Sept. 30, community volunteers may call 770-832-2446 for information and to register. Hands on Carroll County projects scheduled Friday will begin at 10 a.m. and be finished by 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
