UWG student on ESPN ShowSeptember 28, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - Greg Hurd, a junior at the University of West Georgia and a 2002 Cross Creek High School graduate from Augusta, flew to New York City this week to try to “Stump the Schwab.” The ESPN sports trivia show is filming its championship week in the Big Apple and will feature Hurd and about a dozen other contestants competing for a chance to play sports trivia with Mike Schwab, a well known sports researcher. Hurd plans on wearing a UWG sweatshirt. He made the cut by auditioning in Atlanta in August and passing several sports trivia tests and interviews. “They quizzed me and then they quizzed me some more,” said Hurd, 21. “I'm not particularly good at sports but I watched sports as a kid and read almanacs and sports biographies.” Although he answered most of the questions correctly he remembers one that stumped him. “What baseball team plays at the Roger Center,” said Hurd. "I had no idea what the Roger Centre was. I found out later, it's the SkyDome in Toronto where the Blue Jays play. They changed the name.” “Stump the Schwab” is in its third season on ESPN. Mike Schwab is known as the Buddha of Bristol and the Sultan of Stats. He has never missed a final question or lost a competition. Airing of the show has not been scheduled yet.
