UWG student athletes will receive specialized care

September 9, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton Orthopaedic Clinic and Southern Therapy Services, Inc. have joined forces to better address the specialized medical needs of student athletes at the University of West Georgia.

Gregory Slappey, MD, a sports medicine specialist with Carrollton Orthepaedic Clinic, will serve as the team physician. In addition to specialized medical care of injuries, Slappey will provide training and safety advice designed to minimize the risk of injury and maximize athletic performance. Tanner Medical Center and Southern Therapy will provide hospital and physical therapy services as needed by student athletes.

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, UWG president, expressed his appreciation to Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System, for his diligence regarding the business arrangements that will benefit approximately 250 student athletes.

“We at the University of West Georgia have always valued our relations with the community, and are delighted that we have been able to work out this business relationship within the local medical community,” Sethna said. “This significant and very positive step forward was possible thanks to the exceptional leadership demonstrated by Loy Howard and Ed Murphy.”

Howard is also pleased with the agreement.

“The University of West Georgia is a tremendous asset to the community and Tanner Health System is pleased to work with the students and faculty. We look forward to working with Dr. Slappey to provide sports medicine services to these talented student athletes,” said Howard.
