Art classes for young people

October 20, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - Art Education majors at the University of West Georgia will be conducting “Saturday Art Classes for Young People” beginning October 25 through November 22 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Elementary students will meet in Room 319 of the Humanities Building while middle and high school students will meet in Room 320. A cost of $45 includes all five sessions and materials.
Some of the lessons planned for the elementary students include Crazy Pumpkins, Silly Puppets, Warm Weaving, Cool Collages and Wacky Wire Creations.

According to Dr. Mary Sheesley, assistant professor of art education, 15 elementary art majors and eight middle and high school art majors will be working with the students during the Saturday classes.

“This is a required activity for art majors because it gives them experience teaching students with a UWG supervisor overseeing the program,” Sheesley explained. “It is a win/win situation allowing young people to receive individualized attention and assistance with their art projects while art majors get teaching experience.”

Vesta Ayers, art education teacher at UWG, said the Saturday Art Classes have been an ongoing project for the past 15 years.
