A DAY Faculty Concert

October 1, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - Where can you go to hear live classical music and jazz without having to make a long drive, dress up, and pay “big bucks” to do it? Many West Georgia students, faculty and members of the community have discovered the ease, convenience and quality of musical concerts and recitals offered right here on the University of West Georgia campus!

“This concert is a gift to the community, and a showcase of the breadth and depth of talent of the music faculty,” said Kevin Hibbard, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music.

UWG News PhotoOne of the most fun and varied concerts occurs every year as a part of the annual A DAY festivities. The A DAY Music Faculty Concert will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 8:15 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall in the Humanities building.

“The concert coincides with A DAY in an effort to support the University’s efforts to build financial support, to increase publicity for A DAY, and to remind the public of the ongoing financial needs of both the Department of Music and the University,” explained Hibbard.

In addition to the concert, the Music Department and A DAY committee are sponsoring a Donor Reception at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities lobby. The two art galleries will be open during the reception to feature the works of professional illustrators Ken and Rick Clubb, and an exhibit by senior Amy Sudduth.

This year’s program features both full- and part-time music faculty and friends performing familiar and new music. It begins with the first movement of a sonata by Brahms featuring Roberta Jacobs on ‘cello and pianist Carol Gingerich. Flutist Anna Thibeault and pianist Jan Adams will play a work by 20th-century Russian composer Taktakishvili. Soprano Julie Lowry will sing a fiery tarantella by Rossini, accompanied by her husband, Terry Lowry, First Baptist Church Minister of Music and Carroll Symphony organizer.

One of Sarastro’s famous bass arias from Mozart’s Magic Flute will be sung by Larry Frazier with Dan Bakos at the piano, and a second husband-and-wife duo, saxophonist John Bleuel and pianist Linda-Li Bleuel, will play pieces by Pierre-Max Dubois encapsulating Hungarian, French and Spanish characteristics. John Bleuel will also perform a “perpetual motion” piece by Francis Poulenc with guitarist Thomas Garcia and baritone Kevin Hibbard.

Hibbard will sing Mephistopheles’ aria from Gounod’s opera Faust, accompanied by Gingerich at the piano. UWG’s new director of bands, percussionist Doug Overmier, will play a “Rainy Day” piece by jazz composer Jim Van Heusen on the vibraphone, and then join jazz saxaphonist Mariano Pacetti and pianist Bakos for the music of jazz great Dizzy Gillespie and an original piece by Bakos.

Parking for all UWG recitals is free at the Humanities, Townsend Center, and other campus parking lots, and there is no admission charge for the concert. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 770-836-6516.
