Marathon Golf Tournament October 9, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - Students at the University of West Georgia will once again be raising money to support the Children’s Miracle Network through a variety of activities that will culminate with a Marathon. Coming up is the Marathon Golf Tournament set for Friday, Oct. 24. The tournament will be held at the Bowdon Golf Course with shotgun starts at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The entry fee is $40 per two-member team to play on the Par 3 course and there is room for 72 teams. A cash prize will be awarded to the winning team. Co-chairs of the publicity committee for the Marathon are Brandy Nissen, special education major from Cedartown, and Jana Phillips, special education major from Dawsonville. According to Nissen, the overall goal for the Marathon has been raised for this year. “We hope to raise $40,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network so we added a few more fundraising events throughout the school year,” Nissen said. “During the past two years, UWG students have raised $36,000 for this charity.” Phillips explained that other activities will include a silent auction, yard sale, and toll roads. More than $300 was collected during the first toll road conducted last week and a second is set at McIntosh Plaza on November 1. The Marathon will be held March 13 in the HPE Building on campus. Participating students remain on their feet for 12 hours engaged in such activities as games, dancing, etc. Each individual solicits sponsors to donate a specified amount of money per hour. According to Nissen, approximately 200 people participated last year. In addition to taking part in the golf tournament, community members may support this effort by being sponsors during the Marathon. Last year’s sponsors included SMI, Southwire, Kroger, Morgan Oil, Publix, Papa John’s Pizza, ARAmark, UWG Publications and Printing, the West Georgian, and Pizza K. “The event grows every year and we still have openings on our Marathon Committee for those interested in planning the activities,” Nissen explained. “Of course, anyone can sign up to participate in the Marathon right up to the March 13 date. It is open to community members, families, anyone!” To register for the golf tournament or to receive additional information about how you can support the Marathon, contact Heather Mack in the UWG Office of Student Activities at 770-836-6526. -30- Use
