October 1, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The Environmental Studies Program and Thomas Murphy Center for Public Service at the University of West Georgia will sponsor a program on environmental health issues on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Food Service Building.

Speakers from the Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Georgia will discuss the impact of pesticides and herbicides on human health, as well as water quality in the local community.

According to Dr. Stanley Caress, associate professor and UWG Environmental Policy Program adviser, this symposium will provide an overview of current scientific information on the public health impact and environmental consequences of the widespread use of pesticides and herbicides. Speakers will present data on the possible short-term and long-term health effects of these products to the general public.

Additionally, the safety of these products for the individuals who use them on a regular basis will be examined. The impact of the use of these products on groundwater quality will also be discussed. Several commercial products currently in use in Georgia will be analyzed.

The symposium will also present information on less toxic alternative method of controlling pests and unwanted vegetation. An alternative method known as Integrated Pest Management will be the major focus of discussion. This method has been endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and its advantages and weaknesses will be investigated. The program, which includes lunch, is free and open to the public. Participants will be eligible for continuing education credit for a nominal fee. For information, contact Caress at 770-836-6504.
