Journey to the Center of the Earth

October 21, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - GMT Productions will present the play based on Jules Verne’s classical story Journey to the Center of the Earth at the University of West Georgia on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

UWG News PhotoThe play is set in 1901 when Professor Lidenbrock and his nephew Harry discover a secret document that states a volcano in Iceland will become inactive for seven days, making it possible for them to travel to the center of the earth.

Harry and his uncle embark on an exciting adventure and discover a world of life too incredible to contemplate! However, Professor Lidenbrock and Harry did not anticipate Docteur Malvaux, the French astrologer who has sworn that she will get to the center of the earth ahead of Lidenbrock, regardless of the cost.

GMT Productions tours throughout 15 states with performances of classical and musical theatre and character-building plays for young audiences. Based in Rome, the company serves over 200 art councils throughout the Southeastern United States, reaching well over half a million audience members a year.

Verne was the first author to deliberately shape science fiction into a genre distinct from fantasy. Along with H.G. Wells, he is considered one of the two founding fathers of science fiction.

This musical adventure takes the audience back to pre-historic days. While the science-fiction classic entertains, it also teaches about ecology, the earth’s elements, the mysteries of volcanoes and the incomparable service that trees and water render to the world of humans and animals.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children and free for UWG students, and can be purchased at the Townsend Center Box Office. For more information, contact the Townsend Center at 770-836-6694.
