October 6, 2003

UWG News PhotoCARROLLTON, GA - Dr. Martha J. Larkin, assistant professor of special education at the University of West Georgia, co-authored the book, Reading Strategies for Elementary Students With Learning Difficulties, with Dr. William N. Bender, associate professor of special education at the University of Georgia.

The book is targeted for general education teachers in grades K – 7 who work with struggling readers but also can be useful for special education teachers who teach students with identified reading disabilities. It outlines current, research-based practices for effective reading instruction, offers practical tactics for immediate implementation, and describes detailed strategies that teachers can build upon and integrate into current curricula and instructional routines.

Other features include a facilitator’s guide, reflective exercises and activities, as well as ready-to-use graphic organizers and checklists.

Larkin taught public school students in general education and special education at the elementary, middle and secondary levels for 10 years prior to earning her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in 1999. She began teaching at UWG in 1998 and specializes in instructional strategies, particularly for students with learning disabilities.

Her specific teaching and research interests include scaffolded instruction, content enhancement, learning strategies, graphic organizers, and grading rubrics. She especially enjoys pursuing these interests in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Larkin has authored and coauthored 17 journal articles, 10 book and monograph chapters, and five research reports and commissioned papers in education and special education.

Bender taught eighth and ninth grade students in the public schools for several years prior to earning his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1983. He specializes in instructional strategies and disciplinary strategies for students with disabilities, particularly those with learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, and attention disorders. Since he has been in higher education, Bender has published over 60 research articles and nine books in special education and education.
