UWG Professor to serve on NAACP October 20, 2003
Sewell will act as a liaison between the Georgia county divisions and the national headquarters. His duties, which will begin in January, will also include keeping financial and narrative records. He is the youngest member of the state’s Executive Committee and the only member representing the University System of Georgia. Sewell said he wants to use his position to encourage people who were members of the NAACP in college to become active in the association again. “I want to bring back more people my age to the oldest civil rights organization that we have,” he explained. Sewell became a life member at age 17, and is the faculty advisor for the UWG NAACP chapter. It wasn’t until the death of Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson this summer, however, that he became active in the state organization again. He said he realized it was time for him to “come back and help” when he was approached by the national NAACP president at Jackson’s funeral. He is also a member of the Carroll County branch of the NAACP. The primary focus of the NAACP is the protection and enhancement of the civil rights of African-Americans and other minorities. The Georgia Conference of the NAACP serves as an advocate for the civil rights of Georgian’s and the protection of people of color. -30- Use
