October 29, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - University of West Georgia Associate Professor Dr. Jorge Gaytan has been recognized for his teaching efforts.

UWG News PhotoThe Georgia Business Education Association awarded its 2004 College Teacher of the Year to Gaytan, director of business education at UWG’s Richards College of Business.

The GBEA is an organization that promotes opportunities for continuing professional growth and development, which leads to the highest quality programs for business students for all levels.

Dr. Faye McIntyre, interim dean of UWG’s Richards College of Business, said that Gaytan’s efforts increase the stature of the University's business program.

“Dr. Gaytan is a world-class teacher!” McIntyre said. “We are proud of his accomplishments. His academic credentials include a number of awards such as this, and he is a valuable part of the RCOB team.”

Gaytan believes that a more personal approach is the most effective way to teach.

“The teacher-student relationship should be easy going, that is, a casual and respectful relationship in which teachers share some personal information with students and make students feel like more than a number,” Gaytan said. “I try to learn students’ names, ask questions about their lives outside school, treat students as equals, try to create relationships with students, talk to students outside class, talk to the student instead of at the student and listen to student anxieties, problems, and needs.”

The UWG Richards College of Business’ goal is to provide quality business and professional education in a personal environment for students primarily from the west Georgia and Atlanta areas. The RCOB also provide students with an educational experience that will prepare them to achieve future career excellence and provides students with dynamic and up-to-date bachelor and master level curricula that are supported by an innovative technological base.
