GYSTC Saturday Science

October 5, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - The West Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center (West GYSTC) at the University of West Georgia is sponsoring the annual “Saturday Science” programs, which offer children a fun way to explore different areas of science in a comfortable setting. Children will participate in hands-on activities that provide enrichment and reinforce material learned in the classroom.

The West GYSTC is a private, non-profit educational organization designed to promote interest in science, math and technology among elementary and middle school teachers and students. “Saturday Science” programs will be held monthly October through May (with no program in January), from 9 a.m. until noon in Room 19 of the Education Center.

This year’s “Saturday Science” programs will cover topics such as “Spooky Science,” “Science ABCs,” “Rockets–Up & Away” and “Sweet Science of Candy.”

The program will begin Oct. 23 with “Spooky Science,” which will prepare children in grades 4-8 for Halloween. Children will learn how to balance a bat, detect a ghost, blow up a pumpkin and identify a spider.

The other six programs will be for various age groups from grades K-8. For example, on Feb. 26, children in grades K-2 can take part in “Science ABCs,” which will allow children to practice the alphabet and learn science at the same time.

On April 16, children in grades 6-8 can participate in “Rockets–Up & Away.” Students will assemble, launch and retrieve a reusable Estes model rocket while learning some basic laws of physics and flight. Parents and friends can come and view liftoff at noon.

In “Sweet Science of Candy,” scheduled for May 14, children in grades 3-5 will learn about sugar structure, solutions, dissolving, and how sight and smell can affect taste.

Except for the rocket class, the pre-registration cost for “Saturday Science” programs is $12 each or three classes for $10 each. If space is available, students may register at the door for $15. The cost of the rocket class is $22. Students should bring a snack or money for vending machines.
