UWG Choral Concert

October 7, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Kevin Hibbard, chair and professor of music, will present their fall choral concert 8:15 p.m., Oct. 13, in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

The Concert Choir, accompanied by Jan Adams, will begin the performance with a rousing chorus by Handel, followed by a contemporary setting of Psalm 23 by Carrollton composer Terry Lowry.

The choir will close the first set with “Gloria” from Dominck Argento’s opera “The Masque of Angel.”

Hibbard said Argento’s “Gloria” is a stunning piece.

“It’s really the feature work of the concert,” said Hibbard. “With its fugue-like writing, shifts in tonality, and brilliant, declamatory ending, it’s almost a lesson in music theory and compositional technique.”

The Chamber Singers will perform three Italian madrigals composed by Monteverdi and Hassier in the 16th Century and “Madrigals for a New Age,” which is a set of contemporary pieces composed by Robert Nelson. Hibbard described them as “very challenging for the singers, but very attractive for the audience.”

Other performances include musical pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Elgar, and Gustav Holst.
