Georgia Music Teachers Association ConferenceOctober 25, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Department of Music is host to this year’s Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) Conference on November 2-5 in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts and the Humanities Building. GMTA is the state branch of the Music Teachers National Association, an organization of teachers and instructors of all musical instruments. The GMTA Conference includes three main components: competitions, the conference and National Association of Teachers of Singing events. The MTNA Fall Competitions allow students to compete in various categories against other students in Georgia. The GMTA conference covers topics concerning music teaching and performing. The NATS events include presentations and vocal master. Clinicians for the conference include Dr. Scott Price, whose pedagogy presentations are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Price is assistant professor of piano, piano pedagogy, and coordinator of group piano at the University of South Carolina. Performances open to the public include two free concert performances at 8:30 p.m., Nov. 3-4, in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. Sarah Ohms, Keru Cai and the Redeemer Piano Ensemble will perform Thursday evening. Cai, a junior at Campbell High School, will play the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2. Cai was born in China and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. The guest artist performing on Friday is Bradford Gowen, associate professor of piano at the University of Maryland. Gowen, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, has made appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Aaron Copland, Mstislav Rostropovich and Maxim Shostakovich. His chamber music activities include performances at the Library of Congress Summer Chamber Festival with the Kronos Quartet and the Guarneri String Quartet.
