Integers ConferenceOctober 11, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia will host the prestigious Integers Conference 2005 on Oct 27-30. The event will focus on international research in the mathematical area of combinatorial number theory. Dr. Bruce Landman, chair of the Department of Mathematics, is organizing the event with Dr. Melvyn Nathanson of the City University of New York, Dr. Jaroslav Nesetril of Charles University in Prague, Dr. Richard Nowakowski of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, and Dr. Carl Pomerance of Dartmouth College. Landman is the managing editor of the online journal Integers: Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory, which makes UWG the home base for the journal. Nathanson, Nesetril, and Pomerance are the editors-in-chief of the journal. The conference includes four plenary talks and approximately 75 other guest speakers. The event is open to students as well as mathematicians. According to Landman, combinatorial number theory is one of the most accessible branches of mathematics, making it possible for even high school students to easily understand many of the research problems. In fact, some of the presentations will highlight student research. This is the second Integers Conference to take place on the UWG campus and is being held in honor of University of California’s Professor Ronald Graham’s 70th birthday. Graham is one of the world’s best-known mathematicians, who has done pioneering work in the areas of graph theory, cryptography, Ramsey theory, quasi-randomness, online algorithms, number theory, computational geometry, and the probabilistic method. His work on routing was influential in the early architecture of the World Wide Web. The conference is being partially supported by the National Science Foundation and the Number Theory Foundation. The proceedings of the Integers Conference 2005 will be published as a special volume of the Integers journal.
