World Year of PhysicsOctober 7, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - When Albert Einstein published three papers in 1905, he probably didn’t envision a celebration of his work a century later at the University of West Georgia. To honor Einstein’s contributions to science, the United Nations has declared 2005 as the World Year of Physics and UWG is joining in the festivities with a lecture series featuring national and international celebrities of physics. UWG Professor James Espinosa is coordinating the lecture series and said the speaker lineup is a Who’s Who in science including Dr. Xiaochun He, Georgia State University; Dr. Mario Diaz, University of Cordoba; and science historian Dr. Patricia Rife. UWG’s Department of Physics and the local chapter of Sigma Xi are hosting the event where topics range from biophysics and ubiquitous plasma to quantum toolboxes and squishy physics. Several students who are science majors and are nationally acclaimed for their research are scheduled to speak, also. The series will continue through May. “The theory of relativity is familiar even to children in grade school,” said Espinosa. “Virtually all modern conveniences, including computers, lasers, LED flashlights, and even solar power cells, are a direct result of Einstein's work.” For a schedule on the international and UWG lecture series, contact the physics department at 678-839-4087 or visit www.westga.edu/~physics and www.physics2005.org. -30- |
