World Year of Physics Lecture Series

October 25, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - Fans of Einstein and history buffs of World War II and the Atomic Age will want to pencil in Nov. 4 on their calendars. The University of West Georgia is hosting renowned science historian Dr. Patricia Rife in its World Year of Physics Lecture Series.

Rife, a professor in the Graduate Department of Technology and Management at the University of Maryland, will present “Einstein, Ethics and the Atomic Bomb.” Rare Einstein slides will illustrate the famous scientist’s philosophic and ethical convictions on peace and his public stance against war during the years 1914-1950.

Rife has developed peace education and communications curriculum for on-line university courses, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Big Brothers and Sisters of metro Atlanta and the University of Hawaii Peace Studies Program. She is an invited speaker at the Carter Center’s Peace Program and has authored three books including Lise Meitner and the Dawn of the Nuclear Age.

The Department of Physics at UWG is hosting the World Year of Physics Lecture Series through May. The event coincides with the 2005 World Year of Physics declared by the United Nations to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Einstein’s work.

Rife’s lecture is scheduled from 2-2:50 p.m., Nov. 4, in the Boyd Building. For a complete schedule of events for the World Year of Physics at UWG, go to www.westga.edu/~physics.
