UWG to Introduce One-Card System

Novembe 26, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - To improve financial services for students, the University of West Georgia has contracted with a private firm called Higher One to provide students with one-card banking and electronic funds disbursement. Higher One offers customized private label and one-card banking services to higher education institutions.

The University’s new one-card system will provide easy access to a variety of customized banking services using what will be called the West Georgia OneCard. Starting in spring semester 2004, the card will automatically be offered as a benefit of enrollment at UWG.

The West Georgia OneCard will function as a MasterCard Debit Card, which is accepted by more than 31 million merchants worldwide. It can serve as a primary bank account, allowing cardholders to get cash from ATMs, write checks, send and receive money electronically, and monitor their accounts online. Students will also be able to receive their financial aid refunds electronically through this new system.

“We are pleased with the benefits we expect from the expanded services the West Georgia OneCard program provides, and we encourage the participation of our students,” said William Gauthier, UWG vice president for business and finance. “Together with Higher One, the University of West Georgia is breaking new ground by creating a card that provides convenience and powerful financial features.”

Walter Hinckfoot, national sales vice president for Higher One, stated, “We’re very excited to have the opportunity to provide our innovative service to UWG.”

Higher One’s vice president of University operations, Casey McGuane, added, “The project team is coming together nicely, and I am confident that this new program will be a success.”

With an exclusive focus on higher education and an innovative approach to student financial services, Higher One helps University partners reduce administrative costs, streamline business processes, increase revenue opportunities and improve the student experience. The company is led by a team of executives with backgrounds in higher education, finance, banking and entrepreneurship.

Higher One’s customers represent a community of more than 100,000 students and include distinguished public and private institutions, such as the first higher education institution to win the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
