German Major Announced November 25, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of West Georgia received approval from the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents to establish a major in German under the Bachelor of Arts degree. The major will be to support the institution’s commitment to the humanities and liberal arts. Over the last several years, UWG has seen enrollment for the German minor nearly triple, according to Dr. Carol Lloyd, department chair. “According to recent statistics from the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, German has experienced a 12.5 percent increase in enrollments nationally,” explained Lloyd. “The growth in demand for German courses at UWG is due to the efforts of our German faculty, Dr. John Blair and Dr. Muriel Cormican.” Lloyd expressed her appreciation to the UWG administration and to the Board of Regents for acknowledging the success of UWG’s German program. “Given the current budget shortfalls, it is an extraordinary tribute to our faculty and students that this major has been approved,” she said. The objectives for the German program are to increase the understanding of the German language, literature and culture; to support diversity, personal enrichment, cultural tradition and philosophical competence; and to fulfill the institutional commitment of internationalizing the curriculum through intellectual rigor. The German program will consist of a 120-semester-hour curriculum with courses in German conversation, composition and history, and will require the completion of an internship or language program in a German-speaking country.
