Residence Hall Council Awarded

November 14, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Residence Hall President’s Council (RHPC) recently attended the South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (SAACURH) student leadership conference in Boone, North Carolina and received the Student Award for Leadership Training (SALT).

SALT is presented annually at the SAACURH conference to recognize and reward excellence in student leadership training programs. Each fall for the past two years, RHPC has coordinated student leadership training for all officers and members of the residence hall councils.

UWG’s RHPC was in competition with the University of Georgia, Appalachian State University and North Carolina State University for the award. While UWG has received awards from SAACURH such as community, student or program of the month, this is the most significant honor awarded to West Georgia’s RHPC.

The UWG delegation to the SAACURH conference consisted of 12 students elected by a student committee. The students were Michael Davis of Buford; Samantha Hope Cannon of Cohutta; Randa Khafagy of Peachtree City; Mindy Lindstrom and Grant Knowles of Lawrenceville; David Bortolazzo of Powder Springs; Patrina Lawson of Atlanta; Lindsey Eidson of Ranburne, Alabama; Tisha Campbell of Decatur; Carroll Colbert of Macon; Kevin Hemphill of Bremen and Margie Weiss of Roswell.

“The RHPC worked extremely hard this year to create and provide an excellent leadership training experience for the residence hall council officers and members,” says Barb Dyer, assistant director of residence life. “They are deserving of the recognition they received at SAACURH.”

SAACURH is a student leadership conference where residence hall student leaders from the southeastern United States come together and network, learn from each other, receive recognition for their efforts, and attend programs on topics such as conducting a meeting, communication skills and leadership skills.
