Dinner, Dance and Auction to benefit UWG Cheerleaders

November 8, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - The West Georgia Braves Booster Club is sponsoring “A Night On The Town,” an auction, dinner and dance to benefit the University of West Georgia cheerleading teams.

UWG News PhotoBoth UWG cheerleading teams — co-ed and all-girl — won national championships last year in Orlando, Fla. and are working hard to defend their titles, said UWG Assistant Athletic Director Mike Cooney. The co-ed team will be trying for a fourth straight title at the Universal Cheerleading Association National Championship in January.

Cooney pointed out although UWG boasts defending national champions, their trip will not be all-expenses paid.

“Based on a skills tape submitted this week, three teams in the co-ed division will earn paid bids and only one all-girls team will earn a paid bid,” Cooney said. “There are no byes. Not only have our teams been busy working on their routines, they are working hard to raise money. In addition to this benefit, they are hosting cheer clinics, a golf tournament at the Lion in Bremen and they are cleaning the Georgia Dome to earn money to make sure they can compete to defend their titles in January — even if they don’t receive paid bids.”

The event will be in the Lower Level of Z-6 Thursday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. with entertainment from The Connection Band, an open bar provided by the Morgan Oil Company, dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse and the auction sponsored by the Braves Booster Club.

The silent and live auctions will features items such as a Peyton Manning autographed NFL jersey, a framed Masters flag from the Augusta National Golf Club, a jersey from six-time Tour-de-France winner Lance Armstrong, an autographed framed 16 by 20 inch photograph of Muhammed Ali standing over a beaten George Foreman, a Michael Vick autographed football jersey and a Cal Ripken Jr. autographed baseball. The values of the items that will be auctioned are worth approximately $3,000.

The $50 tickets to the event are limited and Cooney said that they are going quickly.

“The young men and women who represent UWG as student-athletes are continuing their hard work, both in the athletic and academic areas,” Cooney noted. “They are depending on us for the support necessary to turn that hard work into success.”
