Jazz Percussion Performance

November 5, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia percussion students are in concert on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts on the UWG Campus. The Concert Percussion Ensemble, solo marimba performances by UWG students, and the renowned Jazz Percussion Group will be featured in the concert.

UWG News PhotoThe UWG Jazz Percussion Group returns to campus for the first time this fall. Last spring this group finished a highly successful tour of Georgia, Florida and the Bahamas before performing a television lab production at the Full Sail School for the Recording Arts in Orlando, Fla. Selections for Tuesday include Degradi’s “Oasis,” Jobim’s “Girl From Impanema,” and Kim Pensyl’s “Moroccan Junction.”

The free concert will also contain unusual music for percussion ensembles: Music for Paper Boxes, glow-in-the-dark drumsticks, and a return of the hit “Bulbous Bouffant” will highlight the performance. The concert finale will feature two UWG students — pianist Thomas Vaden of Lilburn and trumpeter Kendall Lawson of McDonough — in an arrangement of “Hooked on Classics.”

For those who love marimba music, students John DeLoach of Douglasville, Erin Williams of Stockbridge, and Matt Young of Cumming will be performing solos by various composers. The UWG students will perform works by Claire Omar Musser, Mitchell Peters and Alice Gomez.
