Saxophone Ensemble to perform

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Saxophone Ensemble will perform in Kathy Cashen Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 8:15 p.m. The ensemble, directed by Dr. John Bleuel, has grown in the past two years from six members to 13 and includes UWG students, faculty and music alumni.

UWG News PhotoThe musical program is widely varied with transcriptions of Baroque English vocal and Italian instrumental sacred music, a Bach concerto arranged for saxophones, a set of Twentieth-Century variations, a march and a five-part atonal contemporary piece for saxophones.

Composers include Giovanni Gabrieli, William Byrd, J. S. Bach, E.E. Bagley, Charles Ives, and Edith Lejet. Dr. Thomas Garcia will direct the second saxophone choir in the Gabrielli canzona, which, like other Gabrielli works, was written for antiphonal or split choir performance in St. Mark’s Church in Venice.

The performers in the recital are Emily Cash of Lawrenceville, Stacy Gay of Carrollton, Audrey Weaver of Lithia Springs, alumna Patti Kelley of Carrollton, Ross Williams of Marietta, Dr. Bleuel, Luigi Baccala of Kennesaw, Josh McRae of LaFayette, Bronn Tallant of Douglasville, Bart Walters of Hiram, Jacob Kahler of Conyers, William Camp of Rockmart, Dr. Andrew Leavitt, and James Johnson of Norcross.
