Mascot Forums scheduled

November 11, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - Logo concepts for the six University of West Georgia mascot proposals are ready for consideration by students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. Several forums have been scheduled to allow for feedback on the visual representation of the mascots under consideration: Mustangs, Wolves, The Brave, Firebirds, Redhawks and Patriots.

To facilitate UWG’s mascot design process, Rickabaugh Graphics was selected based on the firm’s experience assisting clients with creating new athletic marketing identities. All of the forums will be facilitated by Eric Rickabaugh. The forums will provide one means of collecting feedback on the names themselves (without a reference to the specific designs) and to determine whether there is a strong affinity for any of the six names.

Other feedback will be sought on the overall design concept for each mascot; design elements within each proposal (colors, fonts, etc.); discuss whether adjectives may be attached to any of the names (wild, amazing, brave, etc.); and to collect feedback on potential names for brand extension opportunities (names for the bookstore, cafeteria, etc.).

The forum schedule includes Faculty/Staff: Nov.16, 3:30 p.m. in UCC 311 and Nov. 18, 10:30 a.m. in UCC 311; general community/alumni audience: Nov. 16, 5:30 p.m. in UCC 311 and Nov. 18, 12 p.m. in UCC 311; UWG students: Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in TLC 1301 and Nov. 18, 9 a.m. in UCC 311.

The National Alumni Association, the Braves Booster Club, the Student Government Association, and the Student-Athlete Advisory council will also review the designs next week and provide feedback.

The graphics will be available for viewing on the website at http://mascot.westga.edu and a new online poll will launch the week of November 14. In order to complete the poll, participants must have a registration ticket number. Alumni, faculty, staff, donors and many friends of the university were mailed postcards that provided a unique registration ticket number to allow an individual to submit their preferences. UWG students use their student identification number as their ticket number. The use of ticket numbers is intended to prevent electronic ballot box stuffing.

“If you did not receive a postcard but wish to participate in the poll, please email Victoria Gunther (vgunther@westga.edu) or phone 678-839-6447 and request a ticket number,” said Dr. Tara Singer, vice president for University Advancement and chair of the Athletics Marketing Identity Task Force.

The poll will remain online until December 3 and will assist the Task Force in narrowing the field to three mascots for final consideration by the President’s Advisory Council.
