Anthropology scholarships offered

December 17, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Anthropology very rarely is offered in curriculums at Georgia high schools. Nevertheless many students are introduced to exciting world of studying exotic cultures, fascinating archaeological sites, and our primate relatives through magazines such as National Geographic and NOVA television programs.

The University of West Georgia is the home to one of only two departments of anthropology in the University System of Georgia and offers a bachelor of arts degree with a major in anthropology. Its professors include archaeologists, socio-cultural anthropologists, and a primatologist who teach a broad range of anthropology classes and engage students in their research projects.

Seniors who are currently enrolled in public and private high schools are invited to compete in this year’s essay competition for several $1,000 scholarship awards to study Anthropology at the University of West Georgia during the 2005-2006 academic year. These are one of three types of scholarships supported by the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Anthropology Endowment to encourage promising students to pursue Anthropology as an undergraduate major.

For an application form and more information, please contact Dr. Ray Crook, professor of anthropology and director of the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory, at 678-839-6456 or e-mail at anth@westga.edu.
