Scholarship to honor Dr. Mary Miles established
December 15, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - A new scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. Mary Ryan Miles, former director of Health Services at the University of West Georgia.
In 1951, Miles was one of the first females to graduate from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After graduating from Johns Hopkins, she embarked on a career that included serving as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and director of adolescent medicine at Michigan State University. Miles worked in the community as a pediatrician and is a founding member of Hospice Care of Carroll County, Inc. Her efforts on behalf of terminal patients and their families brought much needed services to the area. While at UWG’s Health Services, she was instrumental in halting the epidemic of Cryptosporidiosis, an illness caused by parasites, in Carroll County by compelling the Center for Disease Control to investigate flu-like symptoms plaguing students and residents. Miles retired from UWG in 1990 and then again in 1993. She said her favorite job was caring for students at West Georgia because “unlike children, they could speak for themselves.” Anyone interested in contributing to the Mary Ryan Miles Scholarship Endowment or establishing a new scholarship may call 678-839-6582. -30- |
