201  Classroom Procedures

201.01  Early in the semester, each faculty member should introduce each course clearly in terms of objectives, topics to be covered, types of learning activities, number and nature of tests and reports, absence policies, and the system of evaluation and grading.  In general, he or she should cover the course content described in the catalog and syllabus. A written syllabus is to be distributed to each class on the first day of class, and a copy is to be provided to the department office.  If the instructor wishes to make extra credit opportunities a course option, then the syllabus should include a statement of access to extra credit projects.  Such options, if available, should be linked to course or program learning outcomes.

201.02 Each member of the faculty who teaches a course in the Core Curriculum has the responsibility of explaining the objectives of the core curriculum and discussing how the course contributes to the attainment of the objectives.  A faculty member who does not subscribe to the objectives should not teach a core course.

201.03 Faculty members should define for the student their standards of proper academic conduct; what assistance is permissible in the preparation of reports, term or research papers, and outside projects, including policies for the use of materials prepared by the student for other courses and standards of academic honest on tests.(see Section 207 "Cheating and Plagiarism." )

201.04 Faculty members should promptly return written tests and reports to students for review.  Unless final examinations are returned to students, faculty members should keep such examinations on file for at least one year and allow each student to review his or her paper upon request.

201.05 Faculty members with instructional responsibility must allow students to evaluate the course and quality of instruction in the final week of classes.  For more detail on the evaluation form and procedures, see Section 103.06.
