Bridges

Building connections that bridge both the perceived and real distances between high school and college English

Created in 2007 by Dr. Angela Insenga, the Bridges program addresses a desire of many high school teachers: the ability to give high school students a day in which they experience a model of a college-levelclass to better prepare students for college English. Bridges seeks to provide pupils with valuable skill sets related to reading comprehension and wishes to teach the tenets of sound composition.

Professors, graduate students, and undergrad students journey to various high schools throughout Georgia to teach an English class for the day to juniors and seniors. After the lesson, students are invited to ask questions about the college experience, and what professors expect from their students. Finally, professors distribute models of text-based writing assignments, materials that discuss college-level writing, and contact information.

The University Writing Center at West Georgia is interested in continuing the bridge created by the professors' presentation. Bridges students may use Meebo, located at the bottom of the page, to chat with a Writing Center tutor. Please have several specific questions about your writing assignment in mind, and remember that we may not have the ability to answer all of your questions. Meebo is available Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays 10 am - 5 pm, Thursdays 10 am - 3 pm, and Fridays 10 am - 1 pm. Furthermore, the Chat function is also available from 6 pm - 9 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
