Social, Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education

 A variety of Foundation courses serve both undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education. These courses are designed to provide foundational learning that is essential to all educational courses. Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education studies the history and roots of education. Students examine the underlying influences that have and continue to shape educational policies and practices, and critically explore topics essential to understanding religion and education, cultural diversity, gender, social justice, racism and, spirituality among others. Students are challenged to critically examine basic questions about the nature and purposes of education. What purposes does education serve? How can we best improve our schools? How can education best serve the needs of our students, communities and our country and what is the source of good teaching?
