Process for Development of Mission Statement

1. The committee chair was charged by President Sethna, December 1, 1995, with the responsibility for revising the West Georgia College Mission Statement. Committee members were notified and provided with University System Guidelines for developing a core Mission Statement.

2. On January 10, 1995, the Institutional Studies and Planning Committee (ISPC) designed strategic processes for involving faculty and staff and for meeting governance procedures.

3. On January 17, 1995, faculty and professional staff were informed of the charge from the University System. Guidelines from the System Office, guidelines from the SACS Criteria for Accreditation, and the current West Georgia College Mission Statement were distributed to the entire faculty and staff asking for input in regard to revision of the Mission Statement.

4. On January 24, 1995, copies of feedback were distributed to all ISPC members and the input was discussed.

5. On January 31, 1995, the ISPC began revision of the Mission Statement based on input from the faculty and staff. A subcommittee was formed to refine the outline by the whole committee for writing the new Mission Statement.

6. On February 7, 1995, the ISPC received additional guidelines from the University System and began to incorporate them.

7. On February 14, 1995, a draft of the new revised Mission Statement was distributed to the faculty and staff with the request for additional input.

8. On February 20, 1995, a final draft of the revised Mission Statement (2-18-95) was approved by the ISPC and forwarded to the faculty senate for approval.

9. On February 28, 1995, the ISPC discussed the unofficial feedback from the Chancellor's office and delayed revision to meet governance requirements from the faculty senate.

10. On March 3, 1995, the faculty senate approved the new Mission Statement (dated 2-18-95.)

11. On March 9, 1995, the ISPC met to consider further revisions based on input from faculty. Modifications were made.

12. On April 21, 1995, the ISPC revised the Mission Statement based on feedback from the Central Office Mission Review Team.

13. On April 26, 1995, the ISPC revised the Mission Statement based on input from the faculty and the Mission Review Team and submitted the 4-26-95 draft for approval to the faculty senate, which was approved on 4-28-95.

14. Based on the college-wide open appeals and review meeting on May 5, 1995, the ISPC made revisions for its final draft of the Mission Statement, dated May 8, 1995. The ISPC approved the revised Mission Statement (dated 5-8-95) and forwarded to the University System Office.

15. The May 8, 1995 draft Mission Statement was approved by the Faculty Senate in its May 26, 1995 meeting.
