A Message from the President on Campus Security

Dear Friends,

The University of West Georgia holds a steadfast commitment to its community, both on campus and off, and to its mission of transforming lives through education. The security of the environment in which we apply these principles is paramount. With student safety and success as our top priorities, we work hard every day to ensure our campus is as secure as it possibly can be. However, our university, like many of our sister institutions, is not immune from crime.

As many of you are aware, recent events on and around our campus have created a tangible and justifiable sense of concern. I share that concern and I have asked our university police to increase patrols and surveillance on and off campus. At the same time, our senior leadership is reviewing our security efforts and recommend ways we can improve them.

It is also important, however, to remember we cannot do this alone. We must have the assistance of our students, faculty, staff and community. We, as a community, experience campus life – and its opportunities and challenges – day after day. Only by engaging our partners in our preventive efforts can we succeed.

A message from Dr. Marrero regarding Campus Security, October 2017

Therefore, I ask our many student organizations and leaders to be engaged in this conversation. I also ask our community partners to stand alongside us as your university to say we will not tolerate violence at UWG. We all have important roles in ensuring campus safety. I have no doubt we all have great interest in working together to provide a secure environment on our campus and in the community.

Crisis Management Evacuation Plan

Safety and preparation is a responsibility for everyone, both for yourself and for the University of West Georgia. Students, faculty, and staff need to be aware of the risks that we may face, what we as individuals can do, and what resources are available to help mitigate those risks.

The Crisis Management Plan is the culmination of a planning process to continue being proactive in emergency planning. This should be a “living document” that has great value long before a crisis occurs.
