The mission of the University of West Georgia's Department of Publications and Printing is to provide premium quality printing and duplicating in the most convenient manner and at the best price for faculty, administration, staff, students, non-profits and select others.
About the P&P Mission
P&P supports the University's instructional, research, and service mission by providing services to the campus community. The unit is a part of the Division of Business and Finance and reports to the Director of Auxiliary Services. Marketed as Your On-Campus Copy Center, the facility is located off Back Campus Drive, across from East Commons Dining Hall and in close proximity to the Humanities, TLC, Mathematics/Physics, and Social Sciences buildings, the Ingram Library, the College of Business, and administrative offices on front campus.
Publications and Printing provides duplicating services to augment individual copiers located in most department offices and also provides color copies and transparencies, design services, offset printing, a wide variety of finishing and binding services, laminating, large format posters and banners, presentation materials (retractable banners and stands and tri-fold/stand-alone posters), as well as signs, magnets, decals and more. Recent upgrades have included time-saving imposition software and labor-saving Direct-to-Plate technology.
A six-unit Komori printing press purchased in FY08 replaced a two-color unit that had been in use since 1996. A two-color Ryobi press purchased new in 2003 continues in use for printing forms, letterhead, envelopes, and small-format process color work. Equipment upgrades meet Recommendation B of the SACS report.
The print shop staff performs finishing tasks using two folders, single and triple head drill units, a stitcher, computerized hydraulic paper cutter, automated collating and bindery system, manual hard- and softbound book binder for low-volume work, and spiral (coil), comb, and tape binding. High-speed production copiers and color copier/printers, networked to receive electronic transmission, provide quick copy capability from your location. Print files are received from throughout campus (meets Recommendation C of the SACS report) and outside via email@example.com. Sign and banner-making equipment, first added in 2007, is upgraded regularly. Most of P&P's equipment is now state-of-the-art. Various studies including the Planning and Prioritization study verify the value of the operation and satisfaction with services provided.
Income from fees charged for services to university departments, students, schools, non-profit organizations and other clients generates more than $700,000 annually.
Services offered by Publications and Printing assist university departments in preparing quality publications in support of the Institutional mission. Printing for classroom instruction, continuing education, and special academic programs funded from sources external to the University are fully supported. Numerous awards have been received for print excellence from the state's printing industry trade association, the Printing Industry Association of Georgia, and the International Print Management Association. Due to increased efficiency and improved equipment, the department's production has more than doubled in recent years while maintaining its same 9-member staff.
Major improvements have included implementing a temperature and humidity controlled production environment to control paper stock waste, and extending production floor space to alleviate crowding. A loading dock roof was added in 2010. The last major building renovation took place in 2014.
