    This Study Abroad Program, sponsored by the University of West Georgia's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, includes four weeks in Tours and the surrounding Loire Valley region, known as both the Garden of France and the Cradle of the French Language. Located on the Loire River, Tours is a dynamic city steeped in history that remains an important cultural and intellectual center today.

    The first four weeks , you will stay with a host family in Tours. You will have breakfast and evening meals with your family and will have wonderful opportunities to make lasting friendships. During this time you will also be taking courses at the Institut de Touraine, a very highly respected language school for foreign students learning French. Courses at the Institut will meet five days a week for intensive language study.

    In addition to offering an exceptional immersion experience and outstanding formal language instruction, this program gives students an extraordinary opportunity to discover French culture and civilization.

    • Eligibility

      You must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 and must have completed a minimum of one semester of college French (two semesters are recommended). This program is open to all university and college students in and outside the state of Georgia. Non-University of West Georgia students should apply for transient status as soon as possible.

    Students enrolled in this program may receive 6 semester hours toward their major or minor to satisfy their language requirement.

    • Beginning and intermediate students may take Beginning French II, Intermediate French I and/or II, and French Conversation and Composition.

    • Advanced students may choose from a variety of courses such as Advanced Language Skills, Topics in French Literature, and Topics in French Culture. Specific course offerings may vary each summer according to faculty resources.

    The 2018 program application will be due as shown  on the Language and Culture Program in Tours, France site at http://studyabroad.westga.edu/. Please apply online HERE .

    Complete the Participant Information and Course Information questionnaires and the two signature documents (Program Admission/Conduct/Liability and Program Payment Schedule).
    If you would like to apply for scholarship support from the University of West Georgia (UWG students only), complete and submit the scholarship application, as well. Accepted students will need to provide the program directors with two copies of their passport information page prior to departure.

    Be advised that a passport valid for at least six months after the departure date from France is necessary for travel to France. This means that your passport must be valid until at least December 2, 2018.
    Due to the time required to process passports, applicants are advised to begin applying for or renewing their passports as soon as possible. For information regarding passports, please see the information here: http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports.html

    • Program Cost

      $4,600 + UWG tuition

      Included In Program Cost:

      • Round-trip airfare
      • Several excursions in the Loire Valley, transport between Paris, Tours and Charles de Gaulle airport, (local transportation in Tours is the student's responsibility)
      • Housing: 4 weeks with a French family
      • Breakfasts and evening meals in Tours
      • Tuition at the Institut de Touraine
      • All classroom materials (excluding courses taught by UWG faculty)
      • Insurance
    • Other Expenses

      You will be responsible for lunches, personal entertainment and other purchases, fees associated with your passport, and any other required travel documents such as a visa. Apply for a passport no later than January 15, 2018.

      All students traveling to France are required to obtain a US Passport. All applicants should apply for their passport no later than January 15, 2018. The US passport agency is currently under a backlog, and passports can take 12 weeks or longer to arrive.

      HOPE pays tuition costs. See the Scholarships link for information on the University of West Georgia scholarships, the Charles Beard Study Abroad Award, the Phi Kappa Phi scholarship, and more. Contact UWG Financial Aid, finaid@westga.edu , regarding grants, student loans and Parent-PLUS loans. If you are not a UWG student, further support may be available from your home campus financial aid office.

    • Application and Deposit

      Application Deadline: February 9, 2018 
      The non-refundable $100 deposit is due by the application deadline. Remaining payments are due as shown: $2,250 due February 23, 2018, full balance (remaining $2,250) due March 23, 2018.       No refunds will be issued after April 1, 2018
