Your journey into a career in music starts here! Whether it's continuing your passion to perform, compose, or teach music, UWG offers both Undergraduate and Graduate degrees in Music to help you reach your full potential. The UWG Department of Music is an accredited institution of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and offers degrees in:

  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education
  • Bachelor of Music in Performance - with optional emphases in Jazz Studies and Piano Pedagogy
  • Bachelor of Music in Composition
  • Master of Music in Music Education
  • Master of Music in Performance

All instruction is delivered by a distinguished artist-teacher faculty with extensive credentials and professional experience. Faculty members have regional, national, and international reputations in performance, teaching, research, and creative activities. The faculty at the Department of Music are committed to prepare students to succeed in their areas of interest. From the first day of class to the awarding of your degree, our music faculty are with you every step of the way. In addition to receiving focused applied lessons on your instrument or voice type, our music faculty instruct in the areas of:

  • Music Theory - the foundation of musical understanding
  • Aural Skills (ear training and sight singing)
  • Keyboard Skills
  • Conducting
  • and many more!

Music students at UWG typically perform on a regular basis as part of the programs offered on campus, both as soloists and members of ensembles. Some of the ensembles at UWG include:

  • Wind Ensemble
  • Chamber Singers
  • Marching Band
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • Opera Workshop
  • Many more!

Pianists who attend UWG are part of an instutution of only 10 in the nation - and the first public institution - to acquire Kawai “Elite Performing Instrument Collection” (EPIC) status. Top of the line Shigeru Kawai instruments are located in the piano teaching studio and piano practice rooms.

Prospective students wishing to major or minor in music will need to complete a successful audition in addition to the University's admission requirements to be accepted into the Department of Music. Auditions are held at various times throughout the year - and consideration for scholarship and award opportunities are available to those who audition early! Auditions are accepted for the following pedagogies:

  • Vocal
  • Wind instruments (woodwind and brass)
  • Percussion
  • Piano and organ
  • Guitar

The Undergraduate programs within the Department of Music at the University of West Georgia prepare students to become performers in classical and jazz idioms, to become music teachers in schools and in private studios, and for further study at the graduate level at West Georgia or elsewhere.
