Shirley C. Boykin Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in Science or Math.
John Phillip Kittel Memorial Scholarship
Requirements
- Applicant must be a sophomore or junior engineering preparation major and is on track to transfer to Georgia Tech to complete his/her degree.
- Applicant must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Applicant must have a math/science GPA of at least a 3.0 calculated on all attempted hours. Math/science GPA will be calculated using grades in science/math courses required on the Engineering Preparation track including MATH 1634, 2644, 2654, 2853, 3303: CHEM 1211+L, CHEM 1212+L; PHYS 2211+L, PHYS 2212+L.
- Applicants must submit an essay (300-500 Words) entitled "Why I Want to Go to Georgia Tech and What This Scholarship Would Mean to Me" to Dr. Sharmistha Basu-Dutt (sbdutt@westga.edu), Director of Engineering Studies, TLC 2131, by 5:00 pm on Monday, November 16, 2015.
- A faculty committee within the College of Science and Mathematics will review the essays, interview finalists, and choose the recipient of this annual award for the Spring semester. Final selection will depend on grades at the end of the Fall semester meeting the requirements listed above.
Description
The John Philip Kittel Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by Gloria M. Kittel (Ed.S. 1987), an instructor in the University of West Georgia Department of Mathematics, to honor her husband of 31 years, who was a Georgia Tech graduate. This scholarship will award $500 annually to chosen recipients.

Fred D. White and Gail Brooks White Scholarship
Requirements
- Student with career goal of medical doctor, nurse or biomedical researcher with desire to research and find a cure for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
- Financial need
- GPA of 3.5
- Reside in (preference give in order) Douglas, Haralson, Carroll, Paulding, Polk, Floyd and Cobb Counties
Description
It is the wish of the family, of the late Fred D. White, to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis, the disease which took his life by assisting students who wish a future career as a medical dortor or researcher.

Biology
Bowden Area Hospital Authority Scholarship
Requirements
- Student must be pursuing courses of study related to health care.
- Must be a resident of Bowdon Area Hospital Authority service area, which includes Carroll County, Georgia and Cleburne and Randolph Counties in Alabama.
- The recipient must demonstrate a commitment to provide health care in the service area.
Description
The primary purpose of the Bowdon Area Hospital Authority endowment Fund is to provide annual scholarships to worthy students. The scholarships will be based on merit and awarded by the Faculty of the Biology Department.
Arthur and Shirley Gardner Scholarship
Requirements
- The recipient shall be a rising Junior or Senior majoring in Biology.
- Applicants should apply by writing a letter to the Biology Department stating reasons he or she is best qualified for the award.
- The award shall be based on academic ability and need.
- Recipients shall have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. However, if need is an overriding factor, donors would accept a minimum of 2.6 GPA.
Description
Dr. Gardner, a professor in the Biology Department at West Georgia from 1967 until his retirement in 1990, along with his spouse Shirley, established the scholarship in 1993 to benefit a Junior or Senior West Georgia student majoring in Biology.
Morgan M. Hutson Scholarship
Requirements
- The scholarship will be given to a student with a pre-medical focus and will be based on merit and/or financial need.

This scholarship was established by The Hutson Family in memory of their daughter, Morgan.
Ryan Kauffman Presidential Scholarship
Requirements
- The student must reside in or have graduated from an accredited high school in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson, or Paulding Counties of Georgia.
- Completed transcripts from all high schools attended.
- The student should have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Have a combined SAT score of 1200 along with a copy of SAT score.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- An essay on the applicant's desire for a biological or medical career.
Description
The scholarship is established to attract the brightest students interested in medical school to the Department of Biology. Entering Freshman are preferred.
William P. Maples Scholarship

Jack L. Grogan Scholarship
Requirements
- Minimum high school GPA of 3.5.
- Plan to major in chemistry or intend to eventually attend a pharmacy school; applicants who intend to major in chemistry shall receive first consideration.
- Have submitted a written application to the Chair of the UWG Chemistry Department.
Description
The Jack L. Grogan Scholarship was established in 1989 by the family of Dr. Jack Grogan and the UWG Chemistry Department to support incoming freshman planning to major in chemistry or intending to attend pharmacy school in the future.
William Lockhart Scholarship
Requirements
- The student shall be reasonably expected to have an over-all minimum GPA of 2.00 on a scale of 4.0.
- Will have successfully completed at least one academic year of consecutive chemistry courses at University of West Georgia.
Description
The purposes of this scholarship are to assist a promising chemistry major who has exhibited "heart" and to honor Professor Lockhart for his contributions as a chemistry instructor at West Georgia College. Dr. Lockhart considered "heart" to encompass integrity of character, enthusiasm, intensity, and perseverance.
Pope/Grogan Chemistry Award

This fund is a memorial to Marion Crider, a professor of mathematics for 23 years at West Georgia College who also served as department chair.
Dr. Chatty R. Pittman Scholarship
Requirements
- Student must have completed the calculus series
- Rising junior or senior majoring in Mathematics
- Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.2 in Math
