Donors to the College of Science and Mathematics have graciously provided for awards and scholarships in each of the College's six departments and at the college level. All decisions are made in the Spring semester (except for the Kittel Memorial Scholarship) with the actual award received the following academic year; hence recipients must be returning students in the following Fall semester.   • College of Science and Mathematics
    OFS Academic Experiential Learning Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Entering freshman in the Fall.
    2. High-school GPA of 3.3 and above.
    3. For students majoring in Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics.
    4. Leadership potential.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by OFS Fitel, Inc. (Carrollton) and will provide full tuition and fees for a high achieving student for up to four years. The scholarship will include a paid summer internship at OFS (Freshman, Sophomore and Junior year) providing scholars with in-depth knowledge of the business environment and real world experiences. Leaming experiences will include mentorship, attendance at business meetings, and opportunities to contribute through projects connecting knowledge gained in the classroom to the business environment. The selection process will include an application, student essay, and interviews. The OFS Academic and Experiential Leaming Endowment Scholarship will provide unique experiences for students in and out of the classroom, preparing them to be leaders in industry and in their communities.

    Shirley C. Boykin Science and Math Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Currently sophomore or junior in Science or Mathematics at the time award decision is made.
    2. Working students.
    3. Students must be in good academic standing.

    Description

    Shirley and Helen Boykin were long time supporters of West Georgia and the Carrollton community as a whole. Shirley was a succesful trial attorney. Helen served as a Trustee of the University of West Georgia Foundation. The scholarship was established in 2016 through the Estate of Helen Long Boykin in honor of Shirley C. Boykin. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in Science or Mathematics. Typical award is less than $500.

    John Philip Kittel Memorial Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Applicant must be in (at minimum) their third semester of the engineering track of a science degree program at the time of application and plan to transfer to Georgia Institute of Technology to complete his/her degree.
    2. Applicant must have an overall GPA equivalent to or higher than the current Georgia Institute of Technology requirement for admission through the Regents' Engineering Pathways Program (REPP).
    3. Awarded to a student with a GPA equivalent to or higher than the current Georgia Institute of Technology requirement for admission through the REPP program on all attempted science and mathematics courses
    4. Applicants must submit an essay (300-500 Words) entitled "Why I Want to Go to Georgia Tech and What This Scholarship Would Mean to Me" to Dr. Sharmistha Basu-Dutt (sbdutt@westga.edu), Director of Engineering Studies, TLC 2131 by December 1 of each year.
    5. A faculty committee within the College of Science and Mathematics will review the essays, interview finalists, and choose the recipient of this annual award for the Spring semester. Final selection will depend on grades at the end of the Fall semester meeting the requirements listed above.

    Description

    The John Philip Kittel Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by Gloria M. Kittel (Ed.S. 1987), an instructor in the University of West Georgia Department of Mathematics, to honor her husband of 31 years, who was a Georgia Tech graduate. This scholarship will award $500 annually to chosen recipients.

    Brooks O. Pittman Science Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Student majoring in Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics.
    2. Georgia resident with a 3.5 GPA or better.
    3. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

    Description

    The scholarship was established in memory of Brooks O. Pittman by members of his family. Mr. Pittman taught at West Georgia College until his death in 1952. He helped design and plan the "new" Science Building, which later became the Geosciences Building.Typical award is around $500.

    R. K. Redding Construction Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Engineering or Engineering Preparation major.
    2. Incoming freshman with min. HS GPA of 3.0 or sophomore when award is received in the Fall; must maintain 3.0 GPA at UWG.

    Description

    This scholarship was created by Randall K. Redding to help serve students in the engineering program. Typical award amount is about $500.

    Betsy Jean Sutton Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Student majoring in one of the degree programs in the College of Science and Mathematics.
    2. Students who have high financial need.
    3. Preference will be given to students born in Georgia.
    4. Preference given to students in good academic standing with current GPA of 3.0 or greater.

    Description

    Annual award is $1,000.

    Fred D. White and Gail Brooks White Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Student with career goal of medical doctor, nurse or biomedical researcher with desire to research and find a cure for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) or other pulmonary diseases.
    2. Must show financial need.
    3. GPA of 3.5 or better.
    4. Preferance given to residents of (preference give in order) Douglas, Haralson, Carroll, Paulding, Polk, Floyd and Cobb Counties.

    Description

    The scholarship was established by members of the White family to honor the memory of Fred Douglas White and to honor Gail Brooks White. Mr. White attended West Georgia College. It is the wish of the family, of the late Fred D. White, to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis, the disease which took his life by assisting students who wish a future career as a medical dortor or researcher. The scholarship is renewable for four years, with an annual award of around $1,500.

  • Biology
    Dr. Roy L. Denney Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Students majoring in biology or chemistry, with a pre-medical focus.
    2. Awarded on basis of, merit and potential with, financial need being secondary.

    Description

    This scholarship is for students majoring in biology or chemistry, with a pre-medical focus. The scholarship will rotate between the two departments, with biology awarding in odd-numbered years and chemistry awarding in even-numbered years. Typical award amount is around $700.

    Arthur W. and Shirley M. Gardner Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The recipient shall be a Sophomore or Junior majoring in Biology when the decision is made in the Spring.
    2. Applicants should apply by writing a letter to the Biology Department stating reasons he or she is best qualified for the award.
    3. The award shall be based on academic ability and need.
    4. Recipients shall have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. However, if need is an overriding factor, donors would accept a minimum of 2.6 GPA.

    Description

    Dr. Gardner, a professor in the Biology Department at West Georgia from 1967 until his retirement in 1990, along with his spouse Shirley, established the scholarship in 1993 to benefit a Junior or Senior West Georgia student majoring in Biology. Typical award amount is about $500.

    Dr. Thomas A. Hart Biology Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Academically superior student majoring in biological sciences.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by one of Dr. Hart's former students to honor this great teacher who served on the first faculty at West Georgia College. Typical award amount is around $6,000.

    Morgan M. Hutson Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The scholarship will be given to a student with a pre-medical focus and will be based on merit and/or financial need.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by The Hutson Family in memory of their daughter, Morgan.

    Ryan Kauffman Presidential Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The student must reside in or have graduated from an accredited high school in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson, or Paulding Counties of Georgia.
    2. Completed transcripts from all high schools attended.
    3. The student should have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 or higher.
    4. Have a combined SAT score of 1200 along with a copy of SAT score.
    5. Two letters of recommendation.
    6. An essay on the applicant's desire for a biological or medical career.
    7. Preference is given to incoming freshmen in the Fall.
    8. The scholarship can be renewed annually provided the recipient remains at the university as a biology major intent on attending medical school or graduate school, maintains a minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher and participate in Honors courses, is a full-time student, serves as a mentor and role model for other biology majors, and provides a progress report toward the degree and a letter of recommendation from his/her biology advisor.

    Description

    The scholarship was established by the parents of Dr. Ryan Kauffman, a Presidential Scholar recipient and 2000 graduate of the State University of West Georgia. The purpose is to attract the brightest students interested in medical school to the Department of Biology. Typical award amount is about $3,000 and can be renewed.

    Laura Handy Knight Memorial Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The recipient should be a rising junior or senior in biology when the decision is made in the Spring.
    2. Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    Description

    The scholarship was established in 2011 by the family of Laura and Michael Knight to reward outstanding and deserving students at the University of West Georgia. This scholarship will serve as a legacy to the loving memory of Laura Handy Knight. Laura earned a full scholarship to undergraduate school at West Georgia, graduating with honors in chemistry and biology. Typical award amount is around $1,500.

    William P. Maples Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Undergraduate Biology major.
    2. GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    3. Preference will be given to a student supporting a child(ren), and demostrates financial need.

    Description

    The scholarship was established by the Maples family to honor and remember Dr. William P. Maples, a biology faculty at the University of West Georgia for 25 years. Typical award amount is about $1,000.

    Lois Martin Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Biology and chemistry majors with an interest in pursuing a medical degree.
    2. GPA requirement is 3.0.
    3. Financial need.

    Description

    This scholarship was established in 2015 by Dr. Rick Martin in honor of Lois Martin, Dr. Martin's mother and hero. It is awarded to  biology and chemistry majors with an interest in pursuing a medical degree. Each year, two biology majors and one chemistry major will receive the award. Typical award amount is around $700 per student.

    Dr. Jim Mathis Biology Scholarship (annual)

    Requirements

    1. Incoming freshman with a strong background and interest in biology, or an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in biology (GPA 3.0 minimum).
    2. Preference for someone who will reflect Dr. Mathis' lifetime commitment to both research and excellence in the classroom learning experience.

    Description

    This annual scholarship was established by family, friends and colleagues as a tribute to Dr. Jim Mathis, who was a faculty and department chair of biology. It will be awarded to a student who demonstrates both competence and interest in the field of biology.

    T. R. "Cotton" Williamson Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Georgia resident demonstrating financial need.

    Description

    This award was created by the Williamson family in memory of their husband and father, Dr. T. T. "Cotton" Williamson '32. He was president of the second graduating class of WGC and received the Outstanding Alumnus award in 1995. He was a chiropractor for 63 years and practiced until his death at age 87. Typical award amount is abuot $1,000.

  • Chemistry
    Latha M. Barnes Award for Excellence in General Chemistry

    Requirements

    1. Awarded for excellence in the general chemistry sequence.

    Description

    This award was established to recognized academic excellence in general chemistry and to honor Dr. Latha M. Barnes for her many years of dedicated service in the area of teaching general chemistry at West Georgia College. The recipient(s) will receive a certificate. Two awards of about $500 each are currently being made.

    Chemistry Workshop Leader Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Recipient must have served two or more semesters as a workshop leader in the Department of Chemistry.
    2. Priority will be given to those who have served longer and undertaken greater responsibility in the workshop program.
    3. Awarded to a student with financial need

    Description

    This scholarship was established in 2012 by Dr. Lucille B. Garmon to support students pursuing an undergraduate degree with a major in chemistry. Typical award amount is around $1,200.

    Department of Chemistry Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Awarded to a new or returning student majoring in Chemistry.
    2. Awarded to a student demonstrating an aptitude for Chemistry, career objective, leadership skills, and/or invovlement in the Department of Chemistry.
    3. Financial need (secondary)

    Description

    This scholarship was established by the faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry. The annual award is $500.

    W. Glenn Esslinger Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Chemistry major.
    2. Maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
    3. From Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Heard or Haralson counties.

    Description

    The scholarship was established in 2013 by the family of William Glenn Esslinger, Sr. to honor his memory and his commitment to education. Typical award amount is around $1,000.

    Jack L. Grogan Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Minimum high school GPA of 3.5.
    2. Plan to major in chemistry or intend to eventually attend a pharmacy school; applicants who intend to major in chemistry shall receive first consideration.

    Description

    The Jack L. Grogan Scholarship was established in 1989 by the family of Dr. Jack Grogan and the UWG Chemistry Department to support incoming freshman planning to major in chemistry or intending to attend pharmacy school in the future. The award amount is $1,000, or the balance of the account should it fall below.

    William L. Lockhart Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Chemistry major.
    2. Student shall be reasonably expected to have an overall minimum GPA of 2.00 on a scale of 4.0.
    3. Student must have financial need.
    4. Preference is for a student who has exhibited "heart".

    Description

    The purposes of this scholarship are to assist a promising chemistry major who has exhibited "heart" and to honor Professor Lockhart for his contributions as a chemistry instructor at West Georgia College. Dr. Lockhart considered "heart" to encompass integrity of character, enthusiasm, intensity, and perseverance. Typical award amount is around $1,300.

    Lois Martin Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Biology and chemistry majors with an interest in pursuing a medical degree.
    2. GPA requirement is 3.0.
    3. Financial need.

    Pope/Grogan Award for Excellence in Organic Chemistry

    Requirements

    1. Awardee shall be selected after completion of the spring term of an academic year at the University of West Georgia.
    2. Student who has the highest numerical average for an academic year for organic chemistry courses.
    3. Preference given to students who have completed all organic chemistry courses.
    4. Does not have to be Chemistry major.

    Description

    The Hughlan W. Pope award was begun in 1983 to honor Dr. Pope for his accomplishments in the field of organic chemistry, his concern for the development of organic chemistry at West Georgia College, and his devotion to the students of this institution. Dr. Jack L. Grogan was recruited by Dr. Pope in 1970 to expand the organic chemistry program; he went on to expand and enhance the organic chemistry program, become an outstanding instructor, ans show his devotion to the students of this institution. In 1989, the Chemistry Department voted to add Dr. Grogan's name to the award.. This award will benefit an outstanding students in organic chemistry. The awardee shall receive a small plaque engraved with the name of the awardee and the year of the award, and a monetary award of about $200.

    James A. Wash Jr. Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Full time Chemistry major.
    2. Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
    3. Must have completed more than two semesters of chemistry.

    Description

    Dr. Wash was a professor of psychology and director of instructional and reserch services. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students majoring in chemistry. Typical award amount is about $600.

  • Computer Science
    H. Olin Jordan Memorial Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. UWG full-time junior or senior majoring in Computer Science when receiving the award in the Fall.
    2. Must have financial need.
    3. A GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by Mrs. Helen Fillingim in memory of her father H. Olin Jordan.

    Thelma Clifton Memorial Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Computer Science major with an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.
    2. Must be currently enrolled as a sophomore or junior in good standing.
    3. Intends to complete a B.S. degree in Computer Science.

    Description

    Thescholarship was established by Litchell H. Clifton, a former member of the Department of Computer Science, as a memorial to his mother, Thelma Clifton, and her great interest in education and learning. Typical award amount is about $1,000.

  • Geosciences
    John G. Chambers Memorial Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The scholarship will be given to the top Geosciences student.
    2. The determination will be based on GPA; extra-curricular activities; and involvement in the Department, University, and community.

    Description

    This scholarship was established in 2001 by Robert and Amanda York to  reward outstanding students in the field of geosciences. The award will serve to honor the memory of John G. Chambers '92. Typical award amount is abuot $1,000.

    Robert D. Tisinger Geosciences Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Is or has committed to a major in Geosciences.
    2. Minimum 3.2 GPA.
    3. Demonstrates high mathematical, technical, or entrepreneurial skills.
    4. CEMC service areas

    Description

    This scholarship was established in 2012 by the donation of Carroll EMC's unclaimed capital credits. It was established in gratitute for Mr. Tisinger's service to Carroll EMC and the community it serves. The Geosciences scholarship recognizes the interest displayed by Mr. Tisinger in promoting the study and conservation of natural resources. Typical award amount is around $6,000.

    Geosciences Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Majoring in Geography or Geology.
    2. Preference will be given to student(s) with minimum GPA of 2.5.
    3. Preference will be given to student(s) involved in faculty-mentored research.
    4. Preference will be given to student(s) involved in Geosciences Department, the University of West Georgia, and the community.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by the Department of Geosciences. Typical award amount is about $2,000.

  • Mathematics
    Jewell Miles Burson Calculus Award

    Requirements

    1. Awarded to a student with a minimum overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.
    2. Awarded to a student who has completed Calculus I and Calculus II with an "A".

    Description

    The scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. J. Ronald Burson in 1999. The monetary amount of the award is $500. The award will be presented at the  Honors Convocation.

    David Cooley Scholarship (annual)

    Requirements

    1. Math major.
    2. For a rising senior.
    3. Must be in choir or student government.

    Description

    This scholarship was established to recognize David Cooley, a student a West Georgia College. The annual award is $500.

    Marion Crider Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. The recipient must be an outstanding junior or senior majoring in mathematics in the Fall.
    2. The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.
    3. Academic excellence, high character, leadership abilities, and cultural interests shall be considered in the selection.
    4. Preference shall be given to students seeking secondary education certification.

    Description

    This fund is a memorial to Marion Crider, a professor of mathematics for 23 years at West Georgia College who also served as department chair. Miss Crider is remembered as a very dedicated teacher who motivated students through her caring attitude and through her enthusiams for mathematics and for life in general. The award will be presented at the annual Academic Honors Convocation. Annually, three awards of about $1,000 are made.

    Gloria Kittel Math Day Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Awarded to an incoming freshman.
    2. Awarded to a student who attended the Math Day Competition at UWG.
    3. Recipient must have received the highest score on an individual test at the Math Day competition from among all high school seniors who attended Math Day and also indicated an intention to enroll at UWG for the fall semester. The student with the highest score on an individual test at Math Day earns the scholarship at UWG for the fall semester. The student must be enrolled by June 1 of the upcoming academic year.
      If the highest scorer does not enroll, the award goes to the second highest scorer. If the second does not enroll, then the award will go the the third highest scorer.

    Description

    This scholarship was established in 2016 by Gloria Kittel to support students who enjoy and excel in mathematics. The monetary amount is $500.

    Dr. Georgia Martin Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Mathematics major.

    Description

    This scholarship was established by Geneva Martin in memory of her mother, Dr. Georgia Martin. Dr. Martin was the Associate Dean of Student Services for West Georgia College from 1966 to 1979. Typical award amount is about $2,000.

    Dr. Earl Perry Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Awarded in the Fall to a junior or senior, majoring in Mathematics.
    2. Awarded to a student with an overall GPA of 2.5 and a 3.0 in Mathematics.
    3. Awarded to a student who is a citizen of the United States of America.
    4. Preference given to a student with financial need, academic ability and promise.
    5. Prior recipients are not disqualified from consideration during subsequent years.
    Description

    This scholarship was established by Dr. Earl Perry, a professor of mathematics at West Georgia College from 1969-1990. Multiple awards can be made in a given year. The total funds available each year is about $2,000.

    Dr. Chatty R. Pittman Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Student must have completed the calculus series.
    2. Rising junior or senior majoring in Mathematics.
    3. Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.2 in Math.
    4. Evidence of good character, service to the University, and leadership potential.

    Description

    This Award was created in memory of Dr. Chatty Pittman, a professor of mathematics for 36 years at West Georgia College who also served as department chairman. Dr. Pittman is remembered as a very dedicated teacher who motivated students through his caring attitude and through his enthusiasm for mathematics.

    Vachel Davis Whatley Jr. Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Mathematics major.
    2. Must be a sophomore, junior or senior when they receive the award in the Fall.
    3. Consideration is given to financial need.
    4. Resident of Carroll and Polk counties first, then Troup County, and finally resident of Georgia.

    Description

    This scholarship was established in honor of Vachel Davis Whatley, Jr.  Typical award amount is around $700.

  • Physics
    Physics and Engineering Club Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Student demonstrating highest level of academic achievement in introductory physics sequence for physics & engineering preparation programs.

    Description

    This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in the physics and engineering preparation programs.

    Dr. Bob Powell and Family Scholarship

    Requirements

    1. Must be an incoming freshman or transfer student, majoring in Physics.
    2. Must have a minimum score of 620 on the math SAT or equivalent on the ACT, or is in the 80th percentile or higher on the SAT and ACT scores.
    3. Must be a U.S. citizen, with preference given to a legal resident of Georgia.
    4. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.
    5. If no physics recipient is identified or matriculates, the scholarship shall be awarded to a member of the Phi Kappa Chapter, Chi Omega Sorority.

    Description

    The purpose of the Dr. Bob Powell and Family Endowed Scholarship is to increase the number of highly qualified physics majors at the University of West Georgia.
