School of Communication, Film, and Media Scholarships

Supporting our majors in their academic pursuits is a priority for The School of Communication, Film, and Media (SCFM). That's why each year we offer scholarship opportunities for achieving students in financial need. The application for 2024-2025 scholarships is available now. The deadline to apply for the SCFM scholarships is April 1. Applicants should complete the application and include their resume and essay (cover letter). Please see the scholarship descriptions below to prepare your resume and essay. Dora Byron Memorial Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Sophomore women who have a "B" (3.0) average or better, a demonstrated interest in journalism, and who are Mass Communications majors may apply for this scholarship. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 average or better while at the University of West Georgia, and must commit to writing at least one article per semester for The West Georgian, the student-produced University newspaper. This scholarship is renewable as long as the above criteria are met. 

Margaret Gauthier Mass Communications Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Students must be majoring in Mass Communications with an emphasis on Speech and  must have attained a minimum 3.0 GPA after completing 45 hours of college credit. Financial need may be a consideration and will be screened through the UWG Office of Financial Aid.

Amanda Lucey Endowed Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Students majoring in Mass Communications that are first generation college students and demonstrate a financial need. Preference is given to students involved in campus-wide activities and experiential learning.

David Stanley Parkman III Mass Communications Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Priority will be given to juniors and seniors pursuing a career in journalism who have attained a minimum 2.5 GPA after completing 30 hours of college credit. Preference will be given to students participating in extracurricular activities, and special consideration given to staff members of The West Georgian. Priority will also be given to students from Carroll County.

Frances Parkman Memorial Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Students must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Mass Communications with a GPA of 2.5 or better.  Priority will be given to students focusing on journalism, students from Carroll County, and students participating in extracurricular programs on campus.  

Claire Abreu Webber Communication Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Students must be in the School of Communication, Film, and Media major. Priority is given to students who are active in WUTV and WOLF Radio. 

George Fields Whatley Scholarship

Recipient Criteria:  Financially deserving Mass Communications major with an emphasis in journalism.
