Dora Byron Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is for first semester female freshmen (renewable for 4 years if conditions are met). This years recipient will receive more than $1100.00 per year. 

Recipient Criteria:

Incoming freshmen women who have a high school average of "B" or better, a demonstrated interest in journalism, and who are Mass Communications majors with a concentration in convergence journalism may apply for this scholarship. The recipient must maintain a "B" (3.0) average or better while at University of West Georgia, and must commit to writing at least one article per semester for The West Georgian, which is the University's student-produced newspaper. 
All applications are due by September 20, 2018. They should be WORD documents submitted via e-mail to and should include FOUR separate WORD documents: 1) an attachment labeled "Your NAME - Dora Byron Application AY 2018-19" (insert your name as part of the file title), 2) a one page resume, 3) a one page letter indicating need for the scholarship and aspirations for future career, and (if available) 4) electronic copies or links to published high school newspaper articles, blogs, or other journalism experiences.
