Matthew Dumas, Japan & Puerto Rico
Matthew Dumas is currently working on his BS in Computer Science. During his studies so far he has studied abroad in Japan and away in Puerto Rico.
"My initial college experience was challenging, and adjusting to the academic pressure left me feeling isolated. However, stepping out of my comfort zone by traveling abroad gave me a supportive community, and eventually my doubts became less, and my confidence strengthened. Going to Puerto Rico and Japan through cultural immersion gave me an intercultural awareness that I would not have gotten otherwise. The experience also helped me to gain respect for others in my group and feel connected to the college. Traveling abroad helped me realize that I could set aside my doubts, adapt to new environments, and appreciate different cultures. Through cultural immersion, I have gained personal growth and resilience that will help me succeed in life and in the career I have chosen."

Meredith Traylor, Greece
Meredith Traylor earned her BBA in Management from the University of West Georgia in 2025. During her studies she studied abroad in Athens, Greece.
"When I studied abroad in Athens, Greece during Spring Break in March 2024, I was a Biology major. After the trip, I switched to Business Management because seeing businesses in a global context opened my eyes to a whole new perspective. Being in a new country pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me real experience communicating with people from different backgrounds and understanding how businesses work outside the U.S. Studying abroad didn’t just help me decide my major. It also gave me the skills and confidence I’ll need to eventually work in international business, where I can use these experiences to navigate global markets and connect with people from different cultures."

Makenna Lyle, Italy
Makenna Lyle earned her BA in English from the University of West Georgia in 2025. During her studies she studied abroad in Spoleto, Italy.
"My study abroad trip to Italy helped shape me as a person, and my relationships with people. I opened up to having more loving relationships as friends and family because of this trip, and because of how great the people running our program are."

Austin Gilbert, Ireland
Austin Gilbert earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of West Georgia in 2025. During his studies he studied abroad in Ireland.
"Ireland has always been a dream travel destination for me and I was very thankful that I got the opportunity to go on this trip. It was an unforgettable, eye-opening experience. I learned about the rich history & culture of Ireland, I learned the importance of space & place (how everything around us intertwines and contributes to an overall importance), saw beautiful scenery, met amazing people, went out of my comfort zone, learned a lot about myself, and overall had the best experience in my lifetime. It would take me forever to explain how much the trip really meant to me. Study Abroad is a great opportunity and if you can do it, I highly recommend it."

Sade Jayeola, Ireland
Sade Jayeola is currently working on her BS in Psychology. During her studies she studied abroad in Ireland.
"I initially signed up for the trip because of the research course, however I also saw this as an amazing chance to finally leave America. I didn't know what to expect from this trip, but it didn't disappoint. From the walkable cities to the vast countryside, and the many, many castles, Ireland left me in awe. The courses we took helped me get out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and discover the complexities and beauty found within the ever changing Irish landscape and culture."

Laylanni Rivera earned her BBA in Management from the University of West Georgia in 2024. During her studies she studied abroad in South Africa.
"My study abroad experience in South Africa exceeded all my expectations. The incredible food, vibrant atmosphere, interactions with various businesses, and connections with locals gave me a new perspective on their cultural beliefs and values, as well as insights into international markets. I also had the opportunity to meet many like-minded individuals, some of whom became close friends and made the trip even more memorable. Their personalities and humor made the experience 10x more amazing. Additionally, staying connected with our professors and administrators after the trip has been incredibly rewarding. They have continued to check in on me and offer support, helping me find internships and resources for my future. Learning about their impressive backgrounds and witnessing their genuine care for students' success has been invaluable and has influenced me to get to know the amazing faculty at UWG."

"My experience in Ireland was truly one of a kind. I stepped out of my comfort zone in so many ways. I tried new food, listened to new music, and met so many amazing people. Everyone I met was so welcoming and helpful. I was also able to learn more about biology and veterinary medicine, which is my career focus, and harness more of what makes me happy. Angelina Houston earned her BS in Biology from the University of West Georgia in 2025. During her studies she studied abroad in France.
"My time learning French was influential to my understanding of global communications and a desire to make global connections in my career in biology. In my time as a biology student, I prioritized research with multiple professors, presentations at conferences, and getting connected within UWG's biology program. Going forward, I hope to study marine biology and prioritize forging global connections within research initiatives."
