(UWG) Living Iceland
Apply by October 1st
Overview
Program Description:
Experience Iceland as a living classroom where culture, business, sustainability, and daily life are shaped by one of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments. Based in Reykjavík, students will explore how Icelanders live and work in a country defined by volcanoes, geothermal energy, dramatic landscapes, limited natural resources, and a strong commitment to sustainability.
The program combines cultural exploration with hands-on learning and professional engagement. Students will discover Reykjavík through a guided city tour, local market, art museum, and public swimming culture; travel the famous Golden Circle to experience Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, and geothermal food production; and visit an Icelandic greenhouse operation. Professional visits will introduce students to real-world issues including overtourism, protection of natural areas, sustainable fishing, agriculture, and the relationship between Iceland’s environment and economy.
Rather than simply visiting Iceland, students will experience how people have adapted, innovated, and built communities in one of the world’s most geographically unique environments.
