Overview

The Literacy/Reading programs offered at the University of West Georgia are dedicated to preparing educators with expertise in the latest literacy theories, research, and evidence-based instructional practices. Our courses, approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, align with the standards set by the International Literacy Association and the International Dyslexia Association and are tailored to provide comprehensive professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers in literacy assessment and instruction. Our curriculum is informed by structured and interactive literacy as mutually beneficial approaches to instruction as guided by the latest research in the science of teaching reading. Our program also prioritizes the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills as interrelated and essential for students’ overall literacy growth.
