HIP Writing Intensive Courses
Writing Intensive Courses
Writing Intensive Courses are one of UWG’s High-Impact Practices (HIPs) and support the university’s broader commitment to experiential learning and career readiness. These courses help students strengthen written communication, deepen learning through writing, and practice forms of communication that matter within academic disciplines and professional fields.
The Writing Intensive Course (WIC) Designation
Writing-Intensive Courses (WICs) are those in which writing is used as a central mode of learning as well as for evaluating student performance. Students in these courses write regularly throughout the course on a variety of assignments, and student grades are connected to the quality and content of their written work.
Writing Intensive Courses utilize writing-to-learn and/or writing-for-the-disciplines as essential components of how subject matter is presented and learned, offering students opportunities to learn about and practice the writing process. In writing-to-learn, students use writing to develop understanding through research, critical analysis, and reflection. In writing-for-the-disciplines, students learn to write in ways that are relevant to an academic discipline or professional field, with emphasis on clear communication and mastery of discipline-specific conventions.
For major assignments, students should have substantial time in and outside class to practice and develop as writers. Faculty feedback across writing assignments, along with opportunities for revision, is essential. Peer feedback should also be encouraged. When students complete Writing Intensive Courses across different levels and disciplines, they build proficiency in different modes of writing, for different audiences and purposes, and strengthen communication skills that are valuable for graduate study and professional work. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
