About the Choir

United Voices Choir membersThe United Voices Choir of West Georgia was founded in 1974 by Reverend Jared Jennings and Dr. O.B. Yates, who saw a need for African American students to have an outlet and more extra curricular activities. The choir gave students a sense of fellowship, worship, and comradery, and has been providing that environment for generations of students.

The choir’s name has evolved throughout the past four decades. Originally, it was named the United Voices Choir of West Georgia, inspired by founding faculty advisor Dr. Yates’ experience in the United Voices of Kansas State Choir. While the name has changed, the sense of bonding that takes place among the members of the Choir has not.

About the Scholarship

Originally established in celebration of the 45th reunion of the United Voices Gospel Choir (UVGC), this tribute scholarship continues to honor the choir’s enduring legacy at the University of West Georgia. In recognition of the 50th anniversary, alumni and friends are coming together once again to bolster the fund, ensuring it can provide awards to even more deserving students.

This scholarship supports current and future members of the United Voices Gospel Choir in their pursuit of academic excellence, helping to recruit and retain talented students and empowering the next generation of UWG leaders. Nearly 40 percent of UWG students are the first in their families to attend college, and this fund helps provide the financial support that can change the trajectory of their lives.

Double the impact of your gift: An anonymous donor has pledged to match every gift made to the scholarship fund, dollar for dollar, up to $20,000.
