Tips for Great Graduation Photos

A little preparation can help you make the most of UWG's various graduation locations. Use these tips to capture bright, polished images you'll be proud to share and look back on for years.

  • Plan ahead and visit the photo spot a few weeks before graduation to avoid crowds and long waits.
  • Bring a mix of outfits, including your cap and gown, to give your photos a variety of looks and styles.
  • Steam or smooth your gown before taking photos so it looks crisp and polished.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking between spots (you can switch to dress shoes for close-ups).
  • Bring a friend or family member to help carry items, adjust your gown, or capture candid moments.
  • Check your tassel placement:
    • Undergraduate students wear their tassel on the right before graduation and move it to the left after the degree is conferred.
    • Graduate-level students (masters and specialists) traditionally keep their tassel on the left for the entire ceremony.
    • Doctoral students typically wear a tassel on the left as well, but their hooding is the main ceremonial change.
  • Watch the weather and prepare for wind, humidity, or rain.
  • Try different angles and backgrounds to add variety and personality to your shots.
  • Use golden hour (about an hour after sunrise or before sunset) for the most flattering lighting.
  • Highlight UWG pride by incorporating the photo spot signage, campus landmarks, and school colors into your photos.
