The event was held on Sept. 14 in the Tanner Health School of Nursing and brought together students, faculty, healthcare professionals and community partners to explore solutions to workforce challenges facing healthcare systems, particularly in rural communities.

During her presentation, Preston shared insights into developing sustainable healthcare workforce pipelines, strengthening educational partnerships and creating collaborative ecosystems that support healthcare professionals from recruitment through career advancement. Her discussion emphasized innovative approaches to workforce development and strategies designed to address the unique challenges experienced by rural and underserved healthcare systems.

“Healthcare workforce shortages continue to impact communities across the nation, particularly in rural areas,” said Preston. “Addressing these challenges requires strong partnerships between educational institutions, healthcare organizations and community stakeholders working together toward a common goal.”

With more than 23 years of experience in healthcare education and leadership, Preston brings a diverse background as a faculty member, program director, department chair and academic administrator. Her professional experience includes work with the University of Kentucky’s Center of Excellence in Rural Health and leadership of healthcare education programs designed to serve rural populations. At Oregon Institute of Technology, she currently leads initiatives focused on strengthening healthcare workforce pathways across frontier and rural Oregon.

As a medical laboratory scientist, educator and academic leader, Preston offered attendees practical perspectives on the intersection of healthcare delivery and higher education. Her presentation highlighted the critical role that colleges and universities play in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals while fostering the partnerships necessary to meet workforce demands.

The event reflects Perry College’s continued commitment to connecting students and faculty with industry leaders and experts whose work addresses pressing regional and national challenges.
