Go, West: UWG Alumnus Rusty West ’88 Awarded Honorary Doctorate Share this page

The University of West Georgia celebrated one of its most distinguished alumni, Rusty West ’88, on Friday by awarding him an honorary degree during the institution’s Spring Commencement.
West accepted an honorary doctorate of humane letters, sharing with graduates and their loved ones several truths that he has learned during his career.
“It is an honor, and I am so humbled to receive this doctorate of humane letters,” said West. “The most special part is receiving it alongside the inaugural graduating class of the Dr. James ‘Earl’ Perry College of Mathematics, Computing and Sciences.”
West’s generosity made possible the naming of the Dr. James ‘Earl’ Perry College of Mathematics, Computing and Sciences and also supports the college’s programming and innovative initiatives. The naming honors the late Perry, a mathematics professor who taught at UWG for 21 years and was affectionately known by students as “Earl the Pearl” for his tireless dedication to their success.

Perry was known to provide not only academic support, but also meals, transportation and encouragement to those in need, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students, including West. In tribute to his legacy, a new sculpture depicting an oyster and reflective pearl will be installed on campus, symbolizing the lasting impact of Perry’s mentorship and compassion.
“Rusty exemplifies the kind of graduate who not only achieves professional excellence but also gives back in meaningful ways,” said Dr. Ashwani Monga, UWG’s interim president. “His story is a great example of the profound impact a faculty member can have on a student’s life. The mentorship and support Rusty received from Dr. Perry shaped his trajectory, and today, Rusty honors that legacy through innovation, service and a deep sense of purpose. He continues to make a difference and serves as an inspiring model for our graduates to follow.”
A visionary entrepreneur and dedicated philanthropist, West is best known for his transformative leadership in the automotive industry and his commitment to service. A UWG graduate with a degree in mathematics and computer science, he is the former president of Market Scan Information Systems, a company he helped build into a leader of automotive financial technology.

West is also involved in other entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors, including Wings & Warriors, a nonprofit organization he co-founded that supports veterans and first responders through suicide prevention and PTSD treatment.
In his acceptance remarks, West encouraged graduates – now his fellow alumni – to make their place in the world with purpose and integrity.
“Find the biggest problems in your field and solve them,” West said. “Be honest with yourself and focus on making yourself proud. And lastly, try to be better tomorrow than you were today.”
