For the past five days, the University of West Georgia has celebrated Earth Week with a variety of events and activities.

100 and Counting: Dr. Sethna Hits Research Milestone
University of West Georgia Regents' Professor of Marketing Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna has recently hit a milestone in his teaching career: more than 100 of his students have had research papers accepted to national undergraduate research conferences. He has been working on this milestone for more than 14 years, since his first three students were accepted to a national conference in 2003.

Alumna Achievement: Burek Finds Place in the Marketing World
University of West Georgia alumna Sarah Burek has been blazing her own trail and making great strides in the marketing industry. A member of UWG's Class of 2014, Burek currently holds the position of marketing specialist for the Gem Shopping Network.

Summit brings data insights to UWG
On Friday, the University of West Georgia's Richards College of Business welcomed experts in the field of data analytics for the fifth annual SAS Analytics Summit. Students as well as faculty, staff, community members and area professionals were invited to the event, which showcases the variety of applications for large data analytics across multiple fields.

After a whirlwind of a week that saw destructive weather and travel delays, a road-weary William Cross returned to Carrollton from the 17th annual Rice Business Plan Competition at Rice University with one more prize under his belt.

Tradition of Triumph: UWG Debate Continues Nationals Streak
Some of the brightest minds from across the nation recently gathered for two national championship tournaments of the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) and the National Debate Tournament (NDT). University of West Georgia was represented by two students, Josh Michael and Tommy Jordan, throughout the eight days of competition.

First Scholars' Day: Conference Spotlights Undergrad Research
The Honors College and the Office of Undergraduate Research recently sponsored the Undergraduate Research Conference, along with Honors Convocation, to create the University of West Georgia's first Scholars' Day. It was a time to celebrate and recognize UWG students and their academic work. Students from all majors were encouraged to submit presentations and research. Works varied in format from oral presentations to performances.

Artists in the Air: Alum Designs Creative Art Residency Program
University of West Georgia alumna Brandy Barker recently launched Air Air, an innovative art residency program in which artists are challenged to create art in the unusual circumstance of being on an airplane. The first session of Air Air took place March 16-17 of this year.

Summit Highlights Safety: Stanley Black & Decker Visits UWG
On April 7, Stanley Black & Decker sponsored the first Stanley Safety & Security Summit at the University of West Georgia, a one-of-a-kind event designed to highlight Stanley's potential benefits for students, staff, University Police and UWG as a whole.

Meeting of the Minds: UWG Students Discuss Race and Gender
The University of West Georgia's philosophy department recently brought together David Hume, Friedrich Nietzsche, W.E.B. Dubois, Frantz Fanon, Simone de Beauvoir and Iris Marion-Young together--well, more accurately, their ideas and personalities--for a single event. UWG students once again portrayed famous contemporary and historical philosophers during the annual Meeting of the Minds. Moderated by Connor Pierce, the event gives philosophy majors the opportunity to perform a debate while playing the roles of some of the most famous philosophers in history.

Preserving the Past: Curator Receives NPS Grant
Who could forget the logged miles on the dashboard, infinite rows of trees and sightseeing at state parks? A portion of Andrew Carter's childhood was a marriage of traveling and studying the past. Spending quality time with his father, a Boy Scout, and exploring state-run parks foreshadowed his current success as the curator of collections at the University of West Georgia's Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory where he was recently awarded a grant from the National Park Service (NPS).

College of Education Cares: How iCARE is Giving Back to the Community
Dr. Katy Green of the University of West Georgia's College of Education has invested the past three years in the university's iCARE (Instruction of Children At Risk and with Exceptionalities) program. Throughout this time, the iCARE grant has benefited hundreds of students, both at UWG and in the surrounding communities.

Alum Shines Spotlight on Tech in the Theatre
The University of West Georgia has opened doors for thousands of students. In the case of alumnus Jared LeClaire, this door happened to be a stage door, and walking through it was the first step in discovering his passion for technology in the theatre.

Hundreds of University of West Georgia students gathered together on Saturday, April 1, to give back to their campus and community during the annual Big Event.

Affordable Learning Solutions
Dr. Mark Kunkel, a licensed psychologist and professor at the University of West Georgia, was recently awarded with the Affordable Learning Grant for a second time. Based on his research, he created the first and only free introductory psychology textbook to have a comprehensive chapter on humanistic, existential and transpersonal psychology.

New York Times Bestselling Novelist Joshilyn Jackson to Speak at UWG
"The New York Times" bestselling novelist and two-time Georgia Author of the Year Joshilyn Jackson will speak on Wednesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in the University of West Georgia's Campus Center Ballroom. Her program, entitled "Imagination = Empathy: a book talk with novelist Joshilyn Jackson," will include commentary on her novel "The Opposite of Everyone."
