Building on Momentum: Johnson Begins as UWG’s Ninth PresidentShare this page

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the University of West Georgia as Dr. Michael Johnson officially begins his tenure as the institution’s ninth president.
With more than 30 years of leadership experience in higher education and the military, Johnson brings a student-centered, results-driven approach to the role. Prior to his appointment, he served as chief of staff for the University of Houston and the University of Houston System, where he helped lead major initiatives focused on student success, strategic partnerships and regional impact.
“It’s a true honor to be named president of the University of West Georgia,” Johnson said. “UWG has a powerful mission, as well as a dedicated community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters. It plays a significant role in preparing students for success and fueling economic growth in the region, and I look forward to building on the work already underway to shape the future of the fastest-growing comprehensive university in Georgia.”
Johnson’s selection followed a national search led by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG), which named him the sole finalist in May and officially named him as UWG’s next president in June. He succeeds Dr. Ashwani Monga, who served as interim president following the departure of Dr. Brendan Kelly in August 2024. Monga now returns to his role as USG’s executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer.

A first-generation college graduate and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Johnson holds a Ph.D. in higher education leadership and policy studies from the University of Houston, along with degrees from George Mason University and The Citadel. Growing up in a small-town community surrounded by orange groves, he learned the value of hard work, resilience and service – principles that continue to guide his leadership today.
“We have an opportunity to build something truly remarkable at UWG, but it starts with clarity of purpose,” Johnson said. “Improving student success is our top priority, and we must be bold in reimagining how we support students from enrollment to graduation. At the same time, we should explore how UWG can grow in areas like research, the arts, Division I athletics and community engagement. Strengthening those areas will only expand our impact across the region and the state.”
