UWG Powers a Record $654M Economic Impact Across Region Share this page
The University of West Georgia continues to be a driving force in Georgia’s economy, contributing more than $654 million – a new record – to the local, regional and state economy in the 2024 fiscal year, according to a recent study released by the University System of Georgia (USG).

This marks a 6.5 percent increase over the previous year’s impact, reinforcing UWG’s role as a vital economic engine in the region. The study measures institution-related spending from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, and includes direct, indirect and induced economic activity.
“UWG’s growing economic impact reflects the strength of our academic programs and our commitment to career-connected learning,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG’s president. “Preparing students for meaningful careers also helps build stronger communities. This year’s report captures the ripple effects of university operations, student spending and job creation across the region, all of which contribute to a thriving west Georgia region.”
The report highlights several key areas of growth:
- $301 million in student spending, reflecting the university’s vibrant campus life and its ripple effect on local businesses;
- 1,398 on-campus jobs and 3,428 off-campus jobs supported by institution-related spending, underscoring UWG’s influence on employment beyond its campus borders; and
- $1.4 million in expected lifetime earnings for each bachelor’s degree recipient from UWG, with even higher dividends for those earning advanced degrees.
These figures are part of a broader statewide impact, with all 26 USG institutions collectively contributing $23.1 billion to Georgia’s economy and preparing graduates for prosperous futures.
“A degree from one of USG’s 26 public colleges and universities is a million-dollar deal for graduates and a billion-dollar boost for Georgia,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said. “Students see real returns through higher earnings and better opportunities. Meanwhile, our institutions power Georgia’s economy and help local communities thrive.”
