The University of West Georgia Center for Diversity and Inclusion presented the first session of its two part Controversies of Culture Series on September 29 in the Ingram Library Nook. Featured guest Dr. Hazel Cole, mass communications assistant professor and public relations concentration head, discussed “Online Pitfalls and Your Social Brand.”
“One of the challenges I face is for company executives and students to understand social media in a content of its power and possibility,” she said. “Another challenge is getting millennials, and people in general, to understand how having your personal politics and passions heard can paint a negative picture on you, even if your intentions are good.”
The lecture focused on helping students understand social media brand pitfalls, and how to use social media for a competitive edge as a communication professional and scholar. Throughout Dr. Cole’s presentation, she explained the importance of managing and monitoring your social media post, likes, shares, and other material that cannot be erased.
The Controversies of Culture Series occurs twice a semester. The next program will be October 21 at 7 p.m. in Campus Center Ballroom, and the topic will be when “Social Justice Meets Criminal Justice.”Posted on
