Warren Coker, D.M.A.

Dr. Coker earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at Shenandoah University and earned his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He studied vocal performance with Charles Lynam at the University of North Carolina, Marilyn Taylor at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and William Sharp at the Aspen School of Music. He performed the title roles of Gianni Schicchi and Don Giovanni in productions that won the National Opera Association's Production Competitions in 1993 and 1994. He was trained in lyric diction and stage direction by Nico and Carol Castel while on scholarship to the Aspen Music Festival. Warren performed in Carmen, Street Scene, Rigoletto, The Magic Flute, and sang the role of Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro under the direction of Ed Berkeley and Bob Spillman at the Aspen Opera Theater Center. Dr. Coker specializes in songs by Vaughan Williams and the baritone roles of Mozart operas. His DMA research was focused on traditional vocal music of the Shenandoah Valley during the 19th century. He was recently a Vocal Adjudicator at the 2024 Student Auditions for the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and he was a Vocal Music Adjudicator for the 2025 State-Level Literary Championships of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Dr. Coker has previously instructed Applied Voice at Rider University, Appalachian State University, and Shenandoah University. He is currently instructing Applied Voice at the University of Western Georgia.
